Valley of Flowers National Trek

Valley of Flowers National Park is an Indian national park which was established in 1982. It is located in Chamoli in the state of Uttarakhand and is known for its meadows of endemic alpine flowers and the variety of flora.

History of Valley of Flowers National Park

Valley of Flowers National Park presents an ethereal view and an unforgettable experience for visitors. Spread over an area of 87 sq km in the Chamoli district, the Valley of Flowers National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms one of the two core zones (the other being the Nanda Devi National Park) of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve.

The valley is believed to have been discovered in 1931, when three British mountaineers – led by Frank S Smythe – lost their way and chanced upon this spectacular valley. Attracted by the beauty of this place they named it the “Valley of Flowers”.

As the name suggests, Valley of Flowers is a destination where nature blooms in full glory offering a breathtaking experience. Exotic flowers (over 600 species) like orchids, poppies, primulas, marigold, daisies and anemones are an eye-catching spectacle. Sub-alpine forests birch and rhododendron cover parts of the park's area. The trek to the valley offers eye-catching spectacles like cascading waterfalls and wild streams.

Interesting Facts about Valley of Flowers

The Valley of Flowers is a World Heritage Site and is in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

The Valley of Flowers was originally called Bhyundar Valley.

It was accidentally discovered and named by three British mountaineers while on the way back from their expedition at Mt. Kamet.

It is home to exclusive alpine endemic flowers, flora and fauna.

In 1939, a botanist with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Joan Margaret Legge slipped and lost her life at the valley while collecting flowers on unsteady slopes. Her sister erected a memorial in her name at the spot.

Professor Chandra Prakash Kala, a botanist with Wildlife Institute of India, has authored two books on the valley; The Valley of Flowers - Myth and Reality" and "Ecology and Conservation of the Valley of Flowers National Park, Garhwal Himalaya.

It is believed that Lord Hanuman had brought Sanjivani from The Valley of Flowers for the ailing Lord Laxman to cure him.The glaciers from Hathi Parvat and Saptrishi peaks are the main source of The Hemkund lake at the Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara.

Situated at an altitude of around 3,600 m above the sea level, the valley is also home to such rare and amazing wildlife species like the gray langur, the flying squirrel, the Himalayan weasel, and black bear, the red fox, the lime butterfly, the snow leopard and Himalayan monal, to name a few.

114 species were seen in 1993 in Nanda Devi Park. Species frequently seen in the valley include lammergeier Gypaetus barbatus, Himalayan vulture Gyps himalayensis, Yellow-billed and Red-billed choughs Pyrrhocorax graculus and P. pyrrhocorax, koklass pheasant Pucrasia macrolopha, the nationally listed Himalayan monal pheasant Lophophorus impejanus, found in rhododendron thickets, scaly-bellied and yellownape woodpeckers Picus squamatus and P. flavinucha, great and blue-throated barbets Megalaima virens and M. asiatica, snow pigeon Columba leuconota and spotted dove Stigmatopelia chinensis.

According to the Survey of India, situated at an altitude of 4,160 meters in the Himalayas, is a glacial lake setting surrounded by seven Himalayan mountain peaks, each adorned with a Nishan Sahib on its rock. It is approached from Govindghat on the Badrinath Highway. It is at a distance of about 19 kms from Govindghat, the nearest main town is Joshimath. The elevation of the lake at Hemkund is about 4,160 m.
